Ubisoft held an open beta for the Division 2

Ubisoft held an open beta for the Division 2, giving player’s the opportunity to try out a handful of story missions, side missions from the game’s beginning, along with a small section of the endgame. This was an excellent opportunity for players to get their hands on the up-incoming title before it officially launches on March 15.

You start off on your own but, in order to put the shared into shared world shooter, it’s clearly all meant to be played with a team of four people at a time. The matchmaking for this seems to work well and that’s crucial for the PvPvE gameplay of the Dark Zones. These were always the highlight of the first game and having to keep an eye out for both other players and computer-controlled enemies is pleasingly different to The Division’s would-be rivals. The open beta also includes an Invaded mission from the endgame, where a brand-new faction is suddenly introduced. That’s a neat trick for a number of reasons, not least because it makes replaying all the previous missions a lot more interesting with a completely different foe in the mix.

As far as narrative goes, The Division’s wasn’t exactly moving. From my time with the beta, it appears that the story will once again be background noise in The Division 2. Part of the issue here is that you still play as a nameless Division agent who doesn’t utter a word of dialogue. You’re here to help everyone solve their problems, and the NPCs you meet quickly love you. But they don’t really know who you are and neither do you. Since that central identity issue remains in The Division 2, I don’t see how it will effectively tell a hero story, something that the original failed to do as well. At launch, The Division 2 will have three Dark Zones: Dark Zone West, Dark Zone East, and Dark Zone South. Each of the zones has their own aesthetic and caters to a different type of combat strategy. Dark Zone West is set in a suburban area for medium-range combat. Dark Zone East is the commercial sector where you’ll find D.C. landmarks in the distance and is designed for long-range warfare. Dark Zone South is a forested area that accommodates multiple different combat approaches, including stealth. Each instance of a zone can hold 12 players at one time.

The Division 2's beta tests have proven to be superior to the game's competitors so far. It's not in a perfect state but open beta fixed many issues private beta had, which wasn't an unplayable mess to begin with. None of the betas hard crashed any PlayStation 4 systems so far. This beta left me wanting more of the base game, especially with many quality of life improvements that the first didn’t have at launch. With a year’s worth of free content updates planned and the promise of better endgame activities like 8-player raids, The Division 2 will have plenty to keep you busy post-launch.
