With Canada naming its seven-member team Sunday at a ceremony in Vancouver, national team coach Gregor Linsig said his three women jumpers - Atsuko Tanaka, Alexandra Pretorius and Taylor Henrich - had good chances in the inaugural field of 30 competitors.

The women jumpers come into the Olympics after a much-publicized legal battle at the last Games. In late 2009, 14 female jumpers filed suit against the Vancouver Games organizer to be included in the Winter Olympics. While they ultimately lost their case, in April 2011 the International Olympic Committee voted to have women's ski jumping in the Sochi Games.


With women jumpers participating in FIS World Cup events since December 2011 http://www.teamnhlhurricanesshop.com/Brock-Mcginn-Jersey/ , competing on a 90-meter hill compared to 120 meters for the men, Linsig said the circuit was now firmly established and the public will likely be surprised at the quality of the jumpers in Sochi.


"The (Olympic) qualifications have been going on the last two years and they only took the top 30. They want to make sure they're putting on a good event, and all three of our girls made that criteria no problem," he said.


"There's a lot of experience out there with the girls. A lot of them have been jumping for almost 20 years."


At 22, Tanaka is a 12-year veteran of the sport having grown up in Calgary http://www.teamnhlhurricanesshop.com/Brett-Pesce-Jersey/ , Alberta, home to the ski jump built for the city's hosting of the 1988 Winter Games. She goes into Sochi coming off a fourth-place finish at last week's World Cup event in Sapporo, Japan, where she missed the podium by 0.1 of a point.


She said while all three Canadian women have a chance to win a medal in Russia, Japan's Sara Takanashi http://www.teamnhlhurricanesshop.com/T-Shirts/ , a winner of eight World Cup events so far this season, is the one to beat.


"It has been a while and we've worked really hard to get our performances up and as a community of women's ski jumpers I think that has happened and it's just as exciting to watch as the men's competition now," she said.


"The total points between the athletes and the results are really close, so it's really hard to tell who's going to win," she said.


Among the men named to the Canadian team Sunday were Dusty Korek http://www.teamnhlhurricanesshop.com/Hoodie/ , Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes, Trevor Morrice and Matthew Rowley.


Boyd-Clowes is jumping in his second Olympics and the 22-year-old is Russia bound after posting a ninth place in ski flying in Austria earlier this month for his best World Cup result yet.


"That was a good result for me. I don't think it is anywhere near what I'm capable of. Been satisfied with the last month of competition, but (at the Olympics) I'm just aiming to do my best. I really just think that if I have good jumps and I feel confident then I can do well."


The Canadian team now goes to Whistler, B.C. for 10 days of training prior to travelling to Sochi. Boyd-Clowes said he will use the time to get stronger and work on his technique to hopefully make his mark in a sport that has long been dominated by European jumpers.
