At long last, after a 19-year absence, the NFL is ready to return to Los Angeles. It's no longer a matter of if, but when.Expect the NFL to announce a return to America's entertainment capital and the second-biggest market in the next 12 months, with one or two teams debuting in Los Angeles no later than the start of the 2017 season.Several key statements from NFL commi sioner Roger Goodell and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft make it Wes Horton Jersey a certainty the NFL is knocking on L.A.'s door. As a marquee events, it would be nonsensical to award the draft to a city that wasn't home to an NFL franchise. That's why if the NFL puts the draft in L.A., you can bet it's ready to have a team there.Awarding the NFL Draft to a city that isn't home to an NFL team over a key market like Chicago would be an insult to everything the Windy City represents to pro football. The city was a charter member in 1920 with the Cardinals. The Bears moved in from Decatur, Ill., in 1921.If the pending move of the 2015 NFL Draft weren't a strong enough indication, speaking last week at the Beverly Hilton during a panel on Thursday Night Football, Goodell offered this:"It still comes back to, 'Do we have the right solution in Los Angeles?' And that comes back to a stadium."Do we have a stadium that we feel can be competitive with the high-quality stadiums? We think there's a great opportunity to be succe sful (in Los Angeles). I think opportunity's starting to develop, maybe in part because we have that long-term planning in front of us."Goodell suggested last week at the opening of the San Francisco 49ers $1 billion venue that the league could look at the formula used to get Levi's Stadium built as a template for what any NFL franchise in L.A. must have a Sam Mills Jersey state-of-the-art facility.On Feb. 1, 2011 developer AEG and Farmers Insurance Exchange announced a $700 million naming rights agreement for a proposed NFL stadium in L.A. that would increase the value of the sponsorship to $1 billion if two teams used the facility. More than three years later the project has yet to see the light of day, but the me sage 42 months later remains clear: Naming rights for an NFL stadium in Los Angeles would generate much of the money to build it.Kraft joined Goodell at Thursday's NFL panel in Los Angeles and added these remarks about the NFL's return to the city: "I know that Roger and I and a number of the owners who care about the long-term health of the NFL feel it's very important for our future to have Scott Simonson Jersey at least one if not two teams in downtown L.A."Several key hurdles must be cleared before the NFL can announce its return to Los Angeles. None of these obstacles is insurmountable.Will the NFL consider expansion or in a more likely scenario will one or two franchises relocate to Los Angeles?The league could charge upwards of $1.5 billion for an expansion franchise, and would likely be able to sell two franchises to interested buyers in the Los Angeles market. That $3 billion in expansion fees divided up among the current 32 NFL owners would result in a tidy $93.75 million per team.However, there are a number of NFL franchises that could be looking to relocate in the next year or two, making expansion unlikely.The Rams and Raiders left Los Angeles 19 years ago. Both could return.The Raiders are tired of playing in the O.co Coliseum, a stadium that now appears committed to providing baseball's Oakland Athletics a long-term solution. There have been suggestions by Goodell that the Raiders could join the 49ers in Santa Clara at Levi's Stadium, but the Raiders have never played second fiddle to anyone. If the Raiders moved to Santa Clara they would be what the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers are too Staples Center an afterthought.The Rams left Los Angeles and moved to St. Louis, becoming tenants at what is now the Edward Jones Dome.In February, St. Louis refused to spend $700 million in taxpayer money to re-build the Edward Jones Dome. The Rams are now operating on a year-to-year lease, allowing owner Stan Kroenke, among the world's 300 richest people, to move his team whenever he wants. Earlier this year Kroenke bought a 60-acre tract of land in Inglewood, Calif., that is perfect for an NFL stadium.How will the stadium be paid for?The days of taxpayer-funded sports facilities have long pa sed. California taxpayers have demonstrated their refusal time and time again. The $1 billion-plus cost for a Los Angeles stadium will be paid for by sponsorship fees, corporate suite and PSL fees.Is there enough of a demand for the NFL in Los Angeles?The USC Trojans play in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Their collegiate rivals, the UCLA Bruins, play in the Rose Bowl. Those teams have 12 to 14 home games a year. The NFL has grown tremendously on and off the field since the league last had teams in Los Angeles. It offers more than college teams can deliver. So, yes, there would be demand for the NFL.Debate on the NFL's future in Los Angeles is over. The time is now; the NFL is ready.
