Sporting News NFL Columnist Alex Marvez toured training camps with SiriusXM NFL Radio. Here is Alexs take from Detroit Lions camp.ALLEN PARK, Mich. To try and change the fortunes of a downtrodden franchise owned by auto magnates, new Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn became a bit of a car salesman this offseason.Case in point: His recruiting pitch to free-agent running back Stevan Ridley.MORE: Lions, of all teams, recovering from overconfidenceHaving backgrounds with the New England Patriots Quinn spent the past 15 seasons climbing in the front office; Ridley played there from 2011 to 2014 both are accustomed to sustained succe s. In Detroit, though, Quinn couldn't appeal to Ridley by using the Lions storied history.There isnt any.The closest Detroit has ever come to a Super Bowl was an appearance in the NFC Championship game 25 seasons ago. The squads locale in an economically-depre sed, cold-weather region doesnt help lure players, either.Quinn was instead forced to court Ridley with the idea of what Detroit canbecome if his Patriots-inspired plan comes together rather than the clunker it has been."That was what Bob was selling me on just come in,"Ridley told co-host Gil Brandt and me on SiriusXM NFL Radio. I know its the Lions and youre thinking one way but see what we have going on here."Ridley took the trip and bought in, spurning other suitors to sign with the Lions.The anecdote is reflective of the team-wide Gerald Hodges Jersey makeover Quinn has undertaken with the ble sing of Martha Firestone Ford, the 90-year-old team owner who began cleaning house in Lions management last year following a 1-7 start.By NFL standards, the Lions were still in the Model-T era when it came to the trappings at team headquarters. That has changed under Quinns watch.MORE: All-time greatest Lions playersA new FieldTurf surface that head coach Jim Caldwell said was "sorely needed"got installed inside the teams indoor practice facility. The two-story weightroom was remodeled and stocked with new equipment. The Lions upgraded their locker-room digs as well as their hydrotherapy room to help players recover from workouts quicker. The cafeteria was also bolstered with a nutritionist hired to help improve eating habits.Quinn believes this "sprucing up"is not only conducive to winning, but nece sary to put the pride back into being a Lion."We want the players to want to be here and put in those extra hours that are going to be needed,"he said.The hard work the Lions have put in this preseason was evident on their tired faces Tuesday as training camp ended. The up-tempo attack installed by coordinator Jim Bob Cooter has forced offensive players to improve their conditioning and defenders the same to keep up. One example is defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who is now 25 pounds lighter than last season in hopes of helping the Lions improve what was a middle-of-the-road unit in 2015."Were getting in shape running no-huddle but its fun,"Lions wide receiver Golden Tate said. "Weve got some upgrades around the facility, some new coaches, new management, new scouts."Were trying to get to a point where we expect to go into every game and win. We expect to go out and compete Patrick DiMarco Jersey in our division to get a playoff berth."For the Lions to catch Minnesota and Green Bay in the NFC North, quarterback Matt Stafford must continue to play as well as he did in the second half of last season (19 touchdowns and two interceptions in a 6-2 run) after Cooter replaced the fired Joe Lombardi as Detroits play-caller. Quinn praised Cooter for really zeroing in on Stafford's strengths, one of which is operating a no-huddle system.MORE: NFL's top 25 quarterbacks"(Staffords) eyes fit what were doing now, things that are spread out that he can see and adjust to, Caldwell said. Also, he has control over some things because there are mechanisms within the system where hes able to adjust on the run and put you in the best po sible situation."Stafford has more ownership of the offense than ever before with the quarterback and Cooter sharing what Caldwell calls a unique synergy."He runs the show,"Tate said of Stafford. If you look back at the years, it seems Matt does well in two-minute offense and seeing the defense from the line and calling the play.MORE: NFL Preseason Power RankingsStafford will be operating the offense this season without the services of Calvin Johnson, a future Hall of Fame wide receiver who decided to retire at the age of 30 (and later cited Detroit's losing ways as a contributing factor for doing so like Barry Sanders a generation earlier). Stafford, though, actually believes the offense on the whole can be more potent because there will be better pa s distribution on a receiving corps that now includes Tate and free-agent pickups Marvin Jones and Anquan Boldin as well as tight Colton Schmidt Jersey end Eric Ebron and Theo Riddick, who set a franchise record for running backs with 80 receptions in 2015."Calvin would get 120, 130 targets a year at least, said Stafford, who had played with Megatron ever since becoming the No. 1 overall pick by Detroit in the 2009 draft."Those targets are going somewhere else now. Guys are battling for those targets. We have great competition in the receiver room and a bunch of guys who are hungry and trying to make an impact."Quinn, who made upgrading depth and both lines his offseason roster focuses, isn't close to being done putting his touches on the Lions. This makes the 2016 season a pivotal year for everyone in the organization, including Caldwell.He was kept by the 40-year-old Quinn as head coach despite last years struggles, a 21-year gap in age and the fact neither had worked together before.The bond between the two has quickly grown with Quinn revealing that he meets with Caldwell at least six times daily between trips to each others offices.MORE: NFL coach rankings | GM rankings"You get to know each other on a personal level really fast, Quinn said.Not only that, but just seeing him command the team is pretty impre sive. When you sit in the back during team meetings and see whats going on, you can tell the presence he has and overall knowledge of the game.
