Server HGX-1 from nvidia and microsoft
10-January-2018 14:27
NVIDIA and Microsoft have just announced a new server computer system at the Open Compute Summit.

Unlike a computer system that uses ATX standards, this computer system is designed specifically for data center usage and is claimed to maximize GPU performance in its role as a computing center. This system was also introduced as part of Project Olympus managed by Microsoft.

Computer system called HGX-1 is planned to be used to support the increasingly high computing needs. NVIDIA even specifically says HGX-1 will be used to support the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is now beginning to be applied in various fields ranging from car nirsopir, voice recognition, and video analysis system.

HGX-1 is said to be delivering high-performance computing for Project Olympus. According to Extreme Tech, the computer system is powered by eight GPU Pascal GP100. Everything is installed in a special circuit board connected via NVLink technology. This computer system can even be connected to each other to produce higher performance.

The presence of HGX-1 is said to be a new standard for server computers and data centers. Until now, server computers still use standard ATX platform which is a standardization made by Microsoft and Intel in 1995 ago. The advantage of HGX-1 is its design that allows CPU and GPU to connect to each other even though the ratio of the task varies.

Interestingly, Nvidia still has not announced what processors can be compatible with HGX-1. Of course it would be interesting if the HGX-1 could also support AMD Naples processors that had just been introduced some time ago. Thus, NVIDIA and AMD can work together to deliver better server computers.
